Böhler E185 AMPO

The Böhler E185 AMPO is a low-alloyed C-steel that was spezially developped for the demands of the 3D printing industry. It is characterised among other things by the possibility of surface treatment and its high toughness.

Additive Manufacturing offers a multitude of advantages over conventional manufacturing methods like design freedom, shorter lead times or zero tooling costs. However, up to now there has been only a limited number of commercial alloys available for additive manufacturing. The newly developed, patent pending, Bohler E185 AMPO is an AM powder, fulfiling the highest demands from various industries, ranging from motorsports to engineering components and any kind of prototype applications.

Gas atomized powder for additive manufacturing

Additive manufacturing is the revolution in manufacturing technology! Especially in this promising segment, we as voestalpine BÖHLER Edelstahl can build on our extensive materials experience and expertise in the field of powder metallurgy.

Why to buy at voestalpine BOHLER Edelstahl?

Customized alloys depending on your requirements. We atomize BÖHLER standard grades, theoretical selection of 250 grades. voestalpine BOHLER Edelstahl leverages the metallurgical knowledge and manufacturing options of a special steel producer for this new technology. Powder is produced on latest atomization techniques and tested in-house. Vacuum induction melting and atomization under inert gas ensure highest product quality.

Depending on the steel grade and customer requirements, raw materials molten under vacuum or remolten can be used. This ensures the highest quality standards and minimizes undesired impurities. Depending on the requirements of the specific AM process used, we can provide the appropriate particle fraction in a range from 15-150µm.

E185AMPO Development

This low alloyed steel with easy printability and the possibility for surface treatments (e.g. case hardening) was developed especially for the demands of the 3D printing industry. The E185 has a low C-content for good printability and no preheating is required. Also he has a very high toughness and a hardness of 38 HRc. It is easy to rework. Its comparably with 16MnCr5 in the soft-annealed condition. If a high hardness at the surface, high wear resistance at the surface, high fatigue strength at the surface regions or high toughness in the centre of the part is required, we can adjust it accordingly.

Benefits:

  • No heat treatment necessary
  • High strength in „as built“-conditions (lightweight constructions)
  • Very high toughness
  • Hardness of 38 HRc. in printed condition
