Today a broad range of 3d printers is available for additive manufacturing. Most wide-spread is the filament printing principle (FFF/FDM) with extruded polymer filaments as feed material, which is extruded to fine filaments by heated nozzles and deposited in a geometrical defined manner. To circumvent the disadvantage of using prefabricated filaments, which have to be adapted to the requirements of individual printers and which have to fulfil specific material properties like sufficient strength, bendability or elasticity, engineers and material scientists of ZHAW developed and constructed a new type of printer. Instead of a filament a meltable powder or granulate is fed into a micro screw extruder. This extruder produces the molten fine filament, which is he conventionally used to build up the object. The advantage is a high degree of freedom of choice of materials. Metals or ceramics can be produced without specific prefabricated feed filaments.
